Our team, man. What a total embarrassment. What kind of rebuilding year is this? /sarcasm

(FYI these kinds of bugs on ESPN.com are happening to other people too)

Today at 3pm #26 Oklahoma is favored to beat #301 UP by 22 with a 156 o/u.

OU likes to get out and run, so it could be a pedal-to-the metal game. Have to hope the Sooners are a little leg weary after their 92-83 loss to Arkansas yesterday.

Based upon yesterday, the Razorbacks should give UNC all they can handle in the first game of our session at VMC today.

Spread was about more or less the same.

First half was less than stellar. Lot of bad turnovers. Cold shooting couldn't capitalize on Oklahoma's cold shooting. Bigs got into foul trouble early.

Exciting 2nd half runs on 3s that brought it to within 5. Too bad we couldn't capitalize further.

Jojo was lit, but sat out the last few minutes with a precautionary head injury? Wasn't clear of the source of said injury.

Phil and Diabete not having good games tonight. Both got into foul trouble early, ended with 0 points, and out-"stat"-ed by at least one other player.

No sign of Rashad or Smith.

Pilot's Sunday opponent is DePaul, who took Oregon to overtime before losing. Will be another challenge.

Was very close to the possibility of playing Oregon next, but DePaul just could not close it out in the 2nd half or in OT so we get them on Sunday in Session 11 the winless bracket.

I really hope we don't get Bill Walton commentating for a third straight game...

The announcing for the game against Oklahoma was painful. I usually like Bernstein quite a bit, but he was dragged down to Bill Walton's level. They clearly didn't care at all about the game, and made zero effort to hide their indifference toward what should have been their job of announcing the game. Instead it was just two hours of rambling nonsense, with sporadic interjections (often completely inaccurate) about what had just occurred in the game. In most blowouts the announcers will start filling time with some anecdotes and non sequiturs at some point in the second half. In this game, that was the case throughout the entire contest.

They would let multiple baskets go by without so much as acknowledging them. They weren't able to grasp that Walker and Shaver are two different humans. Same with Smoyer and McSwiggan. Walton was paying zero attention to the game. "What's happening? Another timeout?" And, "Oh, is the game over?"

They got in the way of watching the game, rather than enhancing the experience. Extremely rude and disrespectful to both teams.

There is a volume control on the tv. I plan to use it.

( I did turn those two chuckleheads off after the first half)

I’d love to be a fly on the wall for the performance review of Walton’s job at PK80.

There may be reason to keep the finger off the volume control.

The Twittersphere reports no Bill Walton on the OU/UO game that's playing right now, but there are reports that he will do the Arkansas/UConn and UNC/MSU games later today.

Yesterday Friday he was on the UP/OU game and UNC/Arkansas game but not the MSU/UConn and UO/DePaul game. Assuming the same balance logic applies today, we could be spared.

Current spread has DePaul by 9.

The wide ranging commentary of the announcers is partly a result of the Pilot games being less than competitive. I do not think the announcers are to blame for that.

And Walton can be enjoyable in stretches when he is not distracted. Though his lack of interest in the game before him is something of a problem, he tends to circle back. Our winningnest basketball coach, Jack Avina, was mentioned, along with Howard Hall, during the Carolina match. Hope Jack is well and enjoying life still.

Walton, apparently considered a star by ESPN, will be in the Moda Center all day....no worries for Pilot fans.

Jack is not doing especially well health wise....he's in a nursing home in the Bay Area, and apparently still refuses to be selected/inducted into UP HOF.

Howard Hall in even worse shape....gone!

This first half against DePaul is so painful to watch. So many turnovers (5 as of 12 minute mark) and ill advised shots.

We showed a lot more life in the second half. Brought the game to within 7 at one point. There are still a LOT of young mistakes happening, but those will be ironed out as the team matures. You have to be pleased with the 3-point shooting. That is what saved us today.

Turnovers are going to continue to be problem for this team. Our bigs do not handle the rock well.

But I agree, Pilots showed some spunk, narrowing the lead to 7 after having been down 19.

PK80 was/is a tournament that not many in the WCC could handle. Zags get a win in OT over Texas. But this remains a tough tough tournament.

Like to see a D1 win from the team.

Way better (and insightful) ESPN commentary today. The prolonged split-screen was kinda annoying, but not nearly as bad as Bill Walton. I like Sean Farnham.

First half was painful.

Diabate and Franklin need to get some (figurative) tar on their hands. Balls are slipping out of their hands like wet bar soap. Both combined for over half of the turnovers.

3-point shooting was fire.

No signs of Jackson for a second game.

Portland State looked much improved since playing Portland in their opener....Portland...not so much. I thought Portland outplayed Portland State in that game other than the debacle at the end. I hope that the quicker improvement in PSU vs UP is the difference between a team with 8 returning players and a team with almost all new players and not a sign of other development problems.

I'm not sure how we get our players to hang on to the ball. I can personally confirm it did not feel slick in any way.

Jack avian was mentioned, but so were Steele and Holton, presumably because he played with them, and erroneously in conjunction with our 1996 trip to the dance.

Mention of Rob Chavez, the only coach to get us to a dance besides Avina, was absent.

PSU is no fluke, it seems. They were very competitive throughout the tournament this past weekend. Wish we could say the same for the Pilots.

Probably the same thought a lot of us had......if only the Pilots could have been competitive, but as it was in each of the three games, they were competitive for only about 5 to 10 minutes.

Found it difficult to root for PSU at first, but they were so darned fun to watch I had to give in and fully support them. Shocked

KenPom’s analytics after the PK-80 Tournament probably match-up pretty well with the eye-ball test we gave the teams over the long weekend….

Below are each team’s ranking on Thanksgiving morning and again this morning….the biggest winner was Portland State, and the biggest loser was Stanford. (UP remained about where they figure to remain for a while….303 out of 351 schools.)

Michigan St. 11, now 6 (+5)
Duke 5, now 7 (-2)
Florida 9, now 10 (-1)
North Carolina 10, now 13 (-3)
Gonzaga 22, now 15 (+7)
Oklahoma 21, now 22 (-1)
Texas 32, now 28 (+4)
Arkansas 37, now 30 (+7)
Oregon 33, now 43 (-10)
Butler 48, now 57 (-9)
Ohio St. 67, now 69 (-2)
UConn 66, now 72 (-6)
Stanford 70, now 99 (-29)
DePaul 127, now 125 (+2)
Portland St. 223, now 184, (+39)
Portland 302, now 303 (-1)

As an aside, KenPom is now showing UP will win only one WCC game this season, at home against Pepperdine by 3 points.

Some post(ish) PK80 wrap-ups.

PORTLAND (0-3)

Grade: C-minus

Terry Porter's club has yet to beat a D-I team this season. The Pilots fell to UNC, Oklahoma and DePaul by 59 total points. It's not a surprise; the team's seven most used players this season are freshmen and sophomores.

Speaking of Porter, I couldn't help but wonder what it must have felt like for him to coach inside Veterans Memorial Coliseum. He played much of his career in that building which, frankly, should not have been playing host to NBA games as late as 1995. Cool spot for this tourney, but crazy to know it's where the Blazers played the 1992 NBA Finals.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/pk80-notebook-grades-takeaways-on-all-16-teams-from-college-basketballs-mega-event/

1) Although some WCC teams did not have the results they were hoping for in last week’s Thanksgiving tournaments, all will eventually be thankful they faced top-flight competition instead of staying at home and beating such opponents as East Central Tech, Delaware Wesleyan A&T and Rhode Island Institute of Overly Dramatic Arts. Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s, Portland and BYU all experienced great competition at a time of the season in which some schools get soft feasting on cupcakes.

3) The PK80 tournament was not kind to host Portland. In deep water, the Pilots went 0-3 after losses to heavyweights North Carolina of the ACC and Oklahoma of the Big 12 and a Sunday defeat to DePaul of the Big East. By the time the Pilots faced DePaul in what was an 82-69 defeat, they were worn down from games against the Tar Heels and Sooners. Come March, however, coach Terry Porter and his players will be glad they faced those teams.

http://www.wccsports.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/112717aae.html

Portland (2-3)

The Pilots had their hands full as one of the host teams of the PK80 tournament over Thanksgiving weekend. UP drew the defending champion North Carolina Tar Heels in the first round and were handed a 102-78 defeat behind Luke Maye’s 20 points and 10 rebounds. Portland did not fare much better against Oklahoma in the consolation bracket, losing 93-71. They face Depaul on Sunday afternoon for their final game of the tournament. Credit UP for hanging tough against some very solid teams. They scored more points in the second half of each contest and gained some very valuable experience. Terry Porter’s squad, led by Franklin Porter’s 13 points per game, will face the Multnomah Lions at home next week before hitting the road to take on Boise State next Sunday.

https://www.slipperstillfits.com/2017/11/26/16697478/a-thanksgiving-wcc-wrap-up

Portland’s played a Portland State team that played Duke tough, the defending national champions, a quality Big 12 team and a team lucky enough to be in the Big East. The Pilots have also played two non-D1 teams, and face another this week. Then they travel to a good Boise State team. They’ve yet to face a team close to their level.

https://www.midmajormadness.com/2017/11/27/16699868/wcc-power-rankings-gonzaga-bulldogs-zags-saint-marys-gaels-smc-san-diego-toreros-byu-cougars

While the Vikings were opening some eyes, the tournament was an eye-opening experience for the young Portland Pilots. Terry Porter's team had stretches of success, but fell behind early in each of its double-digit losses to North Carolina, Oklahoma and DePaul.

The Pilots have four freshmen and a couple of redshirt sophomores in key roles. and their youth was evident — especially at the start of their games.

"The caliber of teams and the caliber of players we played in this tournament was high-major," Porter said. "Our guys gained a lot of experience with regards to how we have to compete."

Porter said the exposure from playing in such a prestigious tournament can help in terms of recruiting. More immediately, it will help the Pilots prepare for West Coast Conference action.

Freshman guard Jo Jo Walker said the Pilots got better at on-court communication and grew tougher.

"It was different" than wins over small colleges Walla Walla and Oregon Tech heading into PK80, Walker said. "The speed, and the people were stronger. But as the games went by, I got used to it, and at the end it was just another basketball game."

The best thing the Pilots did during the tournament was shoot from distance. Portland made almost half of its 3-point shots (39 of 82).

• Despite the losses, Porter said he enjoyed being back at Memorial Coliseum, where he played alongside Clyde Drexler for the early-1990s Trail Blazers teams that twice reached the NBA Finals.

"First time I've been in the building that I wasn't making baskets," Porter said with a smile. "It felt great to be in this building. Obviously this building is a special place for me. ... I have a lot of fond memories. It's always nice to come back to it and think about those great days. It's nice to see them play basketball in this building again, that's for sure."
