After 3+ weeks of conference play the Big Three (GU, SMC, BYU) have already lost 4 combined games to the other teams in the league.

Last season they only lost 2 games to non-Big Three teams all season.

In 2011-12 they lost 3 of those games.

Pilots record so far, according to who was the leading scorer:

Bailey: 3-3
Sharp: 1-1
VDM: 4-2
Nicholas: 1-1
Pressley: 2-0

Looks like we should hope for van der Mars and Pressley to lead the way!

Make that 3-4 when Bailey is the leading scorer. Seems like he has to pick up the slack when the rest of the team can't score. A recipe for losing.

And now the Pilots are 3-5 when Bailey is the leading scorer. What does this mean?! And why are the Pilots so bad at making easy layups? Ugly.

And now Pacific is throttling USD at the Slim Gym; right after the Toreros trounced SMC on Thursday!  scratch

Tough road trip for BYU SMC, lost at USD, and lost at BYU tonight by 13, after leading by 14 early. Garrett Jackson (from Portland) kicked out late for a flagrant foul on a cheap shot elbow to the chin of Mika.

San Francisco did us a favor tonight by beating the Toreros in San Diego. That allows us to maintain sole possession of 6th place, which is a big deal in terms of conference tournament seeding. UP is 5-7; USD is 4-8; Pacific is 3-8; LMU and Santa Clara are 3-9.

The Pilots currently have 2 wins against teams above them in the standings, and 2 losses against teams below them.

Next week will be tremendously important. If we sweep at home we could end the week in 5th place, depending upon Pepperdine's performance Saturday at home against Saint Mary's and at Gonzaga next Thursday.

After originally questioning the schedule next weekend, now I like it. Pilots get 8 days of rest before next game. LMU on Thursday, and the Lions are struggling. Need to keep A.Ireland from going nuts. Then Pepperdine on Saturday, coming of a tough game in Spokane, having to travel to PDX, and having to play at 1PM, losing an extra 6 hours of recovery time (vs. playing at 7PM). The guys need to take advantage of this small break in what has been a mostly lousy schedule, and sweep the next two. No more coulda, woulda shoulda.

Having wins vs. GU and BYU is good for tie-breaking purposes, as well... but yes, next weekend is huge. We need to sweep Pepp and LMU to hold a top-6 spot (and hope that GU beats Pepp, as well). With the exception of when we play them, we need to be GU, BYU, SMC and USF fans the rest of the season...

All the games tonight were upper half vs. lower half teams, and all the upper half teams won. Most games were fairly comfortable margins. Leaves UP still in the middle, since everyone below also lost.

What are the tiebreakers if teams have the same record at the end of the year?

WCC Tiebreaker procedures are as follows:
1) Head-to-head
2) Better record against a higher seed
3) Higher RPI

And nice link, DD. I googled this Sukup guy. First thing that came up was a headline - "Sukup has helped RPI go mainstream" - so HE'S the guy to blame for the RPI atrocity!

I'm confused by the second tie-breaker, "Better record against a higher seed." Is this what it means?:

Hypothetical situation. UP and Pepperdine finish tied for 5th with 9-9 records. They split the head-to-head series. So the next tie-breaker is each team's record against the #1 seed? Assuming Pepperdine loses to Gonzaga, the Pilots would get the tie-breaker by virtue of a 1-1 record against the #1 seed? But if Pepp beats Gonzaga, and both teams are 1-1 against the #1 seed, it would then go to the record against the #2 team (perhaps BYU)?

Should be interesting breaking ties with the tiebreaker this year. Try the link posted:

Yup

That's what happened to USF and USD last year. they split the regular season series 1-1. Both were swept by Gonzaga, Saint Mary's, and Santa Clara, and went 1-1 against BYU and 5-1 against seeds lower than them, leading to the rare RPI tiebreaker. USF was 154 in mr Sukup's list and USD was 174

Turns out USD led much of the 2nd half, by as much as 10 points. But in the last three minutes, Johnny Dee missed a couple shots, and USF outscored USD 14 - 6 to take the victory.

Saturday’s games…..and it’s always fun to see what Las Vegas “thinks”:

*SMC by 4.5 @ PU
*LMU by 1.5 vs. UOP
BYU by 12 vs. USF
#24 Memphis by 4.5 vs. #23 GU
USD by 6 vs. SCU*

* It would be nice for UP if the wonderful SCU guards can put it all together against USD like they did against UP in December, and SMC and LMU win.

SMC survives multiple missed FT's at the end of out regulation and OT to beat Pepp in Malibu, 69-67. This is a good result for us.

Saint Mary's pulled out an OT victory in Malibu this afternoon. Pepperdine is now 7-6, with a game at Gonzaga coming up before we play them a week from today. If all goes according to the conventional wisdom (which is not a reliable predictor of anything in the WCC this season), they will be 7-7 and we will be 6-7 when we take them on. That would enable us to move a half game ahead of them in the standings if we can beat them.

At the risk of stating the blatantly obvious, these next two home games are huge. Last ones of the year the Chiles and hay needs to be made to salt away a sixth-or-better finish in the standings.

p.s. It sure is nice to have a reason to care about conference tournament seeding and how the rest of the conference does on a daily basis - wasn't really the case in 2011-12 and 2012-13.
