2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released Empty 2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released

Post by PilotNut Tue Aug 20, 2013 11:54 am

WCC Link

The conference has released it's 2013-2014 schedule....  and I have to say I don't like how it is playing out for the Pilots at all.  7 of the first 9 are at home, meaning 7 of the last 9 on the road.  I am really amazed they couldn't balance this out more...  that 2nd half of conference play could be brutal.  I also only see 4 home games with the students in session (classes start 1/13/14). Mad  The Gonzaga game on 1/9 is not one of those.

This is really rough... I will be interested to see of other schools have the same unbalanced scheduling...

Our schedule (The TBA's are the times):
12/28/13 San Francisco @ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA
12/30/13 Santa Clara @ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA
01/02/14 Pacific @ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA
01/04/14 Saint Mary's@ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA
01/09/14 Gonzaga @ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA

01/16/14 Portland @ Loyola Marymount Los Angeles, Calif.   TBA
01/18/14 Portland @ Pepperdine Malibu, Calif.   TBA
01/23/14 BYU @ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA
01/25/14 San Diego @ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA

01/30/14 Portland @ San Francisco San Francisco, Calif.   TBA

02/05/14 Portland @ Gonzaga Spokane, Wash.   TBA
02/13/14 Loyola Marymount @ Portland Portland, Ore.   TBA

03/01/14 Portland @ Pacific Stockton, Calif.   TBA

03/06/14 2014 WCC Basketball Tournament First Round Las Vegas, Nev.   TBA
03/08/14 2014 WCC Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals Las Vegas, Nev.   TBA
03/10/14 2014 WCC Basketball Tournament Semifinals Las Vegas, Nev.   TBA

2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released Empty Re: 2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released

Obviously, GU's is similar, as we are back to travel partners.  USD has a similar unbalanced schedule, but the inverse, having their home games in the 2nd half of the season.

I can't help but notice that our travel partner is GU, and USD's is BYU...  it makes me wonder how much the conference is manipulating the scheduling to accommodate TV, etc?  I am not saying it shouldn't be done, but there is a price.... Sad

I notice our home dates seem to be concentrated in the periods when there are no students on campus.

On the other hand, the players will NOT be in class at the beginning of league play, and except for returning from a short Christmas break after Las Vegas, they will not be traveling.....so it's all about concentrating on basketball and winning at the beginning.

Getting off to a winning start and gaining confidence could be very, very important as the season progresses.  Yea, we can spend time worrying about various aspects of the schedule, but it would be much simpler to just get out and play hard with a chip on your shoulder if you think you’ve been unfairly treated.

Only 4 dates in front of the students is flat out reprehensible for both us AND the Zags. Maybe this kind of takes away a bit of the home court advantage in Spokane, but I really don't think its worth it.

Other prioritie$ i guess...

Greg Crawford - CSNNW wrote:If you are a Portland Pilots fan or follower of the Portland Pilots, you probably just shake your head and say, "who did we make mad in the WCC office". Of the 345 teams that play D-1 basketball, you would be hard pressed find  a league schedule that is as bizarre as the one which will be faced this season by Portland. Of course, all coaches and players will say and should say, you have to play everyone at some time, but the Portland Pilots should be screaming, WHAT?

For all teams in the league, which now numbers 10, with the addition this year of the Pacific Tigers, the league season will start a little earlier than normal on December 28th. From the 28th, through January 9th, the Pilots will play half over half of their league games, all at home. I have never  heard of any college team having this kind of schedule, perhaps it has happened, but to start your schedule with five straight league games, is nothing short of bizarre.

And those first five league games, are not exactly cream puffs. The Pilots league opener at home is on the 28th is against San Francisco, Santa Clara comes to town on the 30th, then they are followed by Pacific on January 2nd, then comes always tough St. Mary's on the 4th. The five game home stand to start the league season is topped off by of all teams, Gonzaga on January 9th. All five of those teams figure to have terrific records in 2013-14

After the 9th, the Pilots do not return home until January 23rd against BYU, followed two nights later when they play San Diego. With so many home games to start the season, it is obvious a big gap had to occur in the home schedule and that takes place after the game on the 25th, as the Pilots will not return to the Chiles Center again until February 13th when they meet Loyola Marymount.

There is much optimism on the Pilots' campus this year for men's basketball, fueled by the 2012-13 season of poor play at times and a lackluster league season which saw just four wins, against 12 losses. Improvement is needed and is a must in 2013-14.

This is the one certainty for the Pilots in 2013-14, they better get it done early in league, cause after the 9th of January, they will only play on their court four more times.

Of course, paper is only good to write on, but as far as the Portland Pilots league schedule on paper, it is not only bizarre, but it is also brutal.

Maybe, but his points are valid.

When you consider that 56% of UP's WCC home games are played in the first 12 days of the conference schedule, it's just ridiculous.

Post by Geezaldinho Wed Aug 21, 2013 10:55 am

Last day of school before Christmas in Dec. 17. The first day of classes in January is Jan 13.

So this year there will be an empty student section for the first five of the nine home dates. In addition many folks visit family over the new year( myself included).

Thinking about giving up the season tickets I have had since 1993.

So much for home court.

Don't do it Geez!

Hopefully the powers that be can come up with some creative ways to get some energy into that section! The local grade school kids have done a good job of cheering.

Maybe we can do a PilotNation night and have all us old guys get together in the student section Cheers!

2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released Empty Re: 2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released

Post by Guest Wed Aug 21, 2013 1:18 pm

Why can't WCC play open up with one game in early December with everyone playing their travel partners? School's in session, teams have 6-8 games in by then.

I mean, you play Gonzaga on Dec. 5 and move the WCC schedule back a week and the Pilots still would play 4 out of 9 conference home games in early Jan before the students get on campus with this specific schedule we're dealing with...but I would also have to think that moving to a system like this would be easier for the schedule maker to balance things out so that teams aren't playing BOTH of the first two weeks at home or on the road (4 home weekends, 4 away weekends, 1 travel partner game in the last 9 weeks - easy peazy).

J. Zaninovich - I'll just invoice the WCC for solving this for you guys? All right then.

So....we sacrificed shared tv revenue for having people in the stands?

And I noticed the schedule was arranged so our travel partner got the return game when their students were there. Do we share that revenue?

We can't complain too much here... in 2010-11 and 2011-12, we played @ GU to open WCC play... no students in Spokane in either of those years. Last season there were students at both games.

So, ESPN is controlling the scheduling... which is worse: (1) This awful schedule or (2) not having WCC exposure & revenue from ESPN?

While I will certainly gripe openly & excessively about this schedule, I do have to believe it is worth it in the long run, and have to hope that the schedule will favor us at some point in the future.

2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released Empty Re: 2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released

Post by Stonehouse Fri Aug 23, 2013 4:32 pm

I would much, much, MUCH rather have students here for the Gonzaga game, but there is one small silver lining: it will allow UP to sell a lot of those student tickets, which will ultimately lead to more ticket revenue for that game.

Whether or not it will compensate for all the people unable to attend those other four "break" games, I can't say. But at least there's one small thing to cling to.

No way around it - having more conference home games when students are gone than when students are here is really, really tough.

2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released Empty Re: 2013-2014 Conference Schedule Released

Post by PilotNut Fri Aug 23, 2013 4:46 pm

Well, when you are in the conference cellar for 2 years in a row, you don't have much bargaining power with ESPN and therefore the conference... (not that it makes it right).

Upon reviewing WCC scheduling under Reveno, I see we have actually been fortunate in the opening weekends, and really don't have much room to complain (not that it will stop any of us!).  We average 1 game per year at home without students! Not too shabby.

Looking at only the first 3-5 games (to get to mid January), and how many games were played without students in session:

2012-13: First 3 games on the road, then Gonzaga at home--students were back for that.  Zero games played without students.

2011-12: @ GU (no students in Spokane), then 2 home games (No Students) followed by 2 road games.  2 games played w/o students.

2010-11: @ GU (no students in Spokane), then 2 home games.  Students were probably back for the 1/15 Saturday night game.  1 game played without students.

2009-10: 1/9/10 home vs. GU (I assume no students... that was the Stohl rim-out @ buzzer game, and there was a significant student turn out, IIRC... dorms open that early?), then 2 on the road.  Zero or one game played without students.

2008-09: @ GU (probably no students in Spokane?), then 2 at home, students probably back for the 1/17/09 Saturday night game.  1 game without students.

2007-08: 2 on the road, and then home on Saturday Jan 19th (assumed students back by then).  Zero games without students.

2006-07: 2 home (no students) then 2 on the road.  2 games without students.

Aside from games against Gonzaga, so few students show up, and so few of those do any cheering, that it probably doesn't make much of a difference.

Meanwhile the women's soccer team played "in front of 4,571 fans at Merlo Field on Friday night. 1,700 of those fans were students, which is the largest student turnout ever for a UP soccer game."

This is the culture shift I questioned in my "State of the Program" rant.

It's easy to write about it talk about it... but it's that darn plan Greg mentions. What is on that plan, and how is it funded?! He doesn't quite cover that part...

Pretty much a throwaway article. Yes there should be a culture shift and yes Portland as a city has all kinds of intangibles that Spokane might lack... But he basically rips off Nike and says "Just do it" without offering any kind of concrete way of doing so other than just repeating over and over the way it "should" be.

Anyway its good to at least have the discussion in the public eye, but as PNut said... It'$ mi$$ing $omething.
