August 12 should be an interesting game with the UP men and women, the UBC women, and Southern Oregon men all on the pitch at the same time.

The Thorns and Timbers played together as a benefit for Ukraine recently, so why not?

The women's game has been changed to a 4pm start, followed by the men at 7pm.

I have not seen the official roster yet, but I am told rising sophomore Atem Kato transferred to Penn St.

Too bad, seemed like a wonderful, enthusiastic young player.

That's too bad. I did notice that Ben Ortiz and Wesley Frankel are both not listed on the roster. It was fun watching both play.

I believe Ben, from Orem, Utah, transferred to Utah Valley University.

I heard that Wesley was playing for PDX FC in the USL2 this summer and doing pretty well...is that a pro league? scratch

It’s called “pre-professional, so, Amateur, whatever that means with NIL rules.

After just a couple of days of practice, the Pilots play their first of three-exhibition games tomorrow (Friday) at 7pm against Southern Oregon U.

(The first Pilot Club gathering will be this coming Monday against Oregon St.)

Last season the Pilots finished tied for 3rd in the WCC and made it to the NCAA Tournament where they defeated Seattle U at home.

This year there will be more pressure on Nick's guys as they were picked by the WCC coaches to finish in first place by a single point over Santa Clara.

Todays's match against #5 Oregon St. begins an hour earlier than originally scheduled...6pm!!

UP's 3-1 win over SOU on Friday was obviously an extension of practice as the Pilots worked on fundamentals and conditioning, but if past matches against the Beavers are an indication of how the teams will approach this evening's game, it could get very physical, and the coaches could become heated...especially since it is supposed to be 86 degrees with the sun in their eyes at kickoff. Cool

This is "just" and exhibition match, the Beavers and Pilots meet in a game that counts in Corvallis on October 15...

The Oregon State Beavers are coming off their best season in program history. In 2021, they won their first ever Pac-12 title and earned the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament, advancing to the NCAA quarterfinals before falling to the Washington Huskies. They are ranked fifth in the preseason United Soccer Coaches Top 25 Poll.

The Pilot Club opens at 5pm and food is being served...

I only witnessed the second half, and it appeared all players were available, but who knows? Tough (for me) to tell who are expected to be the starting-11 at this stage of the exhibition matches.

I was impressed with UP's defense in the second half. After the Pilots scored 2 goals within the first 15 or 20 minutes of the second half to match their first half total, they then kept the pressure on while allowing the Beavers just 3 shots and 3 corner kicks...as I recall.

Someone else will have to chime-in about the first half when it was just too danged hot for everyone except mad dogs and Englishmen.

Both teams had their first teams on the field when the Pilots scored the first two goals in the early minutes of the game. The first goal came before I got to my seat in the shade on the student side.

And nobody did inordinate subbing until after the third goal, after which UP started emptying the bench.

Looking at the OSU roster, 29 of 33 players are freshmen or sophomores, ( 2 juniors and 2 seniors) so the team on the pitch was not the senior laden bunch they had last year. The freshman-heavy roster includes seven, possibly eight Spaniards, two or three argentines, and players from Chile, Italy, and France. I hope a couple of the coaches have a good grounding in the Romance languages.

I suspect if they manage to gel a bit, we won’t see the same effort in the regular season matchup after they get a few games under their belt. If they don’t gel, they will have a very long season.
Not lost in their team culture are hard fouls from behind, which among other things, cost them 2 goals in the second half.

My favorite name on the roster was Eneko, which translates as “my little/dear” from Basque.

Final exhibition game of the season tonight at home against UW at 7.

There will be food served in the Pilot Club beginning at 6pm!! (It is rumored to be pasta).

There was something written about there being food carts on campus this evening, but the Bite on the Bluff is next Friday, August 26th, when the men play Central Arkansas and students begin arriving back on campus to begin classes the following Monday.

Impressive win last night against Washington. After a harsh sending off (long way from goal and the ball was on the way to the goalkeeper), they managed the game and the ball brilliantly for the final half hour to keep a clean sheet against a highly ranked (overrated?) opponent.

This team seems to have a lot of composure on the ball and to play very well together. Their positioning off the ball was excellent as was their vision in picking out the best pass. They substituted liberally and the quality of play did not fall noticeably when the personnel changed. Lots of reasons for optimism this season!

Yes, the red card may have been harsh, but it was the correct call.

I believe Kevin will miss the opener against Central Arkansas, not because of his red card last night in an exhibition game, but because of the crazy (IMO) rule that carries over red cards from the previous season.

There is no doubt the back-to-back wins over preseason ranked opponents from the Pac-12 shows the Pilots are playing well as a team, although last night's victory was sealed by two outstanding saves (one of which was a PK) by goalkeeper George Tasouris.

There is reason for optimism this season, but I'm always reluctant to put too much weight on exhibition games, especially with this year's OSU and UW matches because:

The Beavers' other two exhibition matches were a 1-0 win against Corban and a 3-0 loss to Seattle U.
Last night's game was the first and only exhibition match for the Huskies, while we had had two previously.

Please excuse my feeble attempt to graphically update the schedule, but the West Virginia game has been rescheduled for Monday, September 19 and Dixie St. has now officially changed its name to Utah Tech.

(WVU was originally scheduled for November 2, and WBB is playing an exhibition against Warner Pacific that evening at 6pm).

I hope that the students had a good time in the stands last night because what happened on the field won't bring them back. Absolute gutter-ball! 54 fouls, 12 yellow cards, and dozens more infractions not called. This isn't the way the Pilots want to play, but CAU is well-schooled in the dark arts of football. They forced them into that kind of game with aggressive closing down and lots of pushing and shoving. They were also superb at jumping into the Pilots and falling down, and the dreadful referee fell for it repeatedly. He also blew the penalty call that changed the game. Sad. It takes a lot to get me to leave a game early, but after 62 minutes I'd had more than enough. (And of course I missed the best part!)

Indiana might be an easier match-up for the Pilots because they might be more inclined to play the game on the grass rather than on a wrestling mat or in a diving pool.

I was thrilled to see Nick Denley open his UP account mere hours after being awarded a scholarship after 2 years as a walk on after leaving Concordia after the University closed. What a great story… that game though…

Good call. He looks like capable free=kick specialist. He nearly put another one past the keeper in the same spot a few minutes later. That's a very useful weapon to have in your side!

I don't think any of us are really satisfied with the 3-3 game in Bloomington, Indiana tonight, but the Hoosiers are good, and the Pilots came back from being down 3-1.

I did not see a replay of the UP penalty in the box that resulted in the PK goal for IU, but on first look it did not appear much. From the sideline shot of Coach Nick, he too was not pleased.

The Pilots did make their shots count, putting only three on goal in the match, and they all went in, while IU took 20 shots, of which 9 were on goal.

As much as we disliked the way Central Arkansas kept fouling last Friday, today it was UP's turn, as the Pilots were whistled for 29 fouls and 7 cards while IU had just 5 fouls and a lone card.

The Pilots are now 0-0-2, but there will likely be more of these tie games for all teams now that there is no OT during the regular season...

It was a total dive by the IU player, but worthy of an acting award because the referee totally bought it.

In another video, the Indiana coach said he was against doing away with OT, but said if there had been OT:

we win that game, 100%

Turns out that without the phantom foul in the box, UP wins 3-2.

Looks like a dive, but it's hard to see the interplay of the feet/ball from this distance. Referee is not well positioned though and it seems like he is guessing.
