I've got a friend in the athletic department at the U of R and got an explanation on this a while back - 15 of 16 teams at the U of R are the Cougars. Football is the exception as the Rams. They existed as a CJFL team (junior aged, so 18 to 23) from whenever until 1998, when they joined up with the U of R to make the jump to the CIS, or CIAU as it was then known.

Rams already had a board structure and partial funding in place so they retained their old nickname and became the University of Regina Rams, and football at the U of R started up in 1999. 0-8 their first season, then they won a conference title and a national semifinal the next year (we had the "plus one" playoff system before it was cool, though with all 4 as automatic berths).

There's talk of UBC Okanagan joining Canada West for football with a similar funding model/partnership with the BCFC's Okanagan Sun sometime in the next five years.

For the record, I don't believe this particular funding model would come even close to flying under NCAA regulations...so don't expect the University of Portland Winter Hawks to be starting a D1 schedule any time soon.

The BCS schools are threatening a breakaway as we speak. Maybe then.

Hmm, all brunettes for the Divisional games; all blondes for the Championship games....quite unintentional I assure you, but you've got to love those smiles.

Interesting....I've had a number of PN lurkers and readers tell me in person or via email who their favorite cheerleaders were....but none seemed to want to commit in print.

In the unofficial poll, there were a number of Seahawks fans who wanted their team to beat the Carolina Panthers, and yet they were definitely partial to the Panthers cheerleaders.  Second place went to the Cowboys lady.  Personally, I favored the last week's SeaGal....loved the spirit!

As this thread is meant to be fun and a diversion from the seriousness that some place on D1 basketball, I was surprised there have been so few additions to the thread.

Regardless, here's the Super Bowl matchup: Patriots vs. Seahawks.  Patriots are currently favored by only 1 point and the o/u is a relatively low 48.  Interested in what are called "Prop Bets?"  Here are a few: Prop Bets

Well, as the dance teams/cheer leaders don't have anyone talking.....how about beer?

I saw a report yesterday that claimed that there will be 49 million cases of beer drunk in the US on Super Bowl Sunday. Now it's been awhile since I've bought beer by the case, but it is my recollection there are 24 bottles/cans in a case.  If that's true, that comes to 1,176,000,000 beers drunk on Super Bowl Sunday....and apparently that does not include draft beer!

The Census Bureau claims the US population climbs by one person every 33 seconds, making today's US population approximately 320 million.  Of that 320 million, approximately 70% are over the age of 18 (yes, I know that many states have a drinking age of 21, but come on!) which means there are approximately 224 million eligible beer drinkers in the US.  

According to the most recent Gallup poll I saw, 67% of US adults drink alcohol (I'm guessing the PilotNation percentage is a little higher), which means those 1,176,000,000 beers will be drunk by approximately 150,080,000 adults.

There are at least five math and accounting wizards who lurk or contribute on this forum who might say my numbers are wrong, but my math tells me that each alcohol drinking adult in the US will down close to eight beers on Super Bowl Sunday.  Just from the beer drinking crowd I know, there have to be a lot of slackers out there who are not doing their part to keep up the national average!

That sounds about right.

On average. Most probably drink 4-5, but then there's that one guy who really overdoes it every time you get together for a game...

Well, after you drink more than 4 or 5, you're good to spill 1 or 2 anyway.

Hate to break it to you, but a case of Pliny hasn't been 24 bottles for several years.

For a long time the case was 12 bottles.

The purchase limit, even at the brewery, is now 6.

Yep, on the goal line (in the Pilots case, the end line) and all you need to do is catch the pass (just get the ball in bounds) and you win. Dang, we just threw it to the guy in the wrong jersey

There was plenty of time to give Marshawn 3 tries to get the ball in. If you are going to throw once, at least roll Wilson out so he can throw it away if the play isn't there. While not a Seahawk fan, I did find myself rooting for them. It was good to actually see a fourth quarter that mattered, even if that meant I missed a few of the commercials to refill my beer.

Or, if you're going to run a crossing pattern (pick), then pick the guy.  And don't send Lynch in motion and completely eliminate the play fake.  Oh yeah, and don't waste 2 time-outs because you can't get to the line and run another play.  And when you get the ball up 10 with 7 minutes to go, how about don't go 3 and out on 3 pass plays, when your QB is only connecting on prayers.

So many ways to lose a game.

Or when you're up 3 in the last 10 seconds, and all you have to do is not give up a 3, so why not just foul...

1.25 billion chicken wings....that's a lot of dead chickens.

Time to reopen the NFL thread. Gettign down to the wire, with some interesting results. The Raiders are in, the Titans are close, and the Broncos may fall short.

One team that is for sure is the Cowboys. You can tell, because they've got time to do this:
