WCC tiebreaker Empty WCC tiebreaker

With all the teams bunched together near the top, it seems very possible that there will be tie for the conference championship. I was curious about the WCC tiebreaking procedure. I could not find anything online for the 2011 season, but I found last year's procedure. Assuming that things have not changed, the tiebreakers for deciding the tournament representative are, in order:

  • Head-to-head results against the other tied team(s).
  • If a tie still exists, compare goal differential in Conference games.
  • If a tie still exists, compare goals scored in Conference games.
  • If a tie still exists, compare goal differential in Conference games in descending order of finish.
  • If a tie still exists, a coin toss may be used to determine the automatic qualifier.
In looking at the Pilots' chances, we definitely need SMC to lose or tie at least one game and, given the logjam at the top, likely need to win our games. Assuming both of those things happen, we will be, at worst in a two-way tie with LMU or USD. (We would have a better record than SCU because we would given them a loss, and LMU and USD play each other, so both cannot win out.)

If UP ends up with a win and a draw, the number of possibilities to analyze is large. The Pilots still have a big advantage if things go to the second tiebreaker. Present goal differentials are:

  • GU: -12
  • LMU: +1
  • SCU: +1
  • SMC: +2
  • UP: +6
  • USD: +0
  • USF: +2

This is a HUGE weekend for the Pilots! With the conference championship potentially on the line, it would be nice to see everyone out in full force! It would be awesome if there was close to or a fully packed house to cheer on the boys, they can really use the support!

Sunday you get in free when you wear your Timbers Army scarf. You bet I've been pushing this game on Timbers sites.

So if the Gaels and Pilots win their remaining games - Gaels win WCC. What are chances of at large invite for the Pilots? They won both meetings with Gaels, have better overall record and RPI.

But only 48 teams get into the men's tournament. Our best bet is to win our last two games and have San Diego & St. Mary's tie on Sunday, or San Diego win...

GO PILOTS!

Our RPI is a little low to be considered for an at-large bid. We do have some quality wins over the likes of Northwestern and Washington, but the 48 team tourney kills us. Instead of 30 or so at-large bids like the girls have, there are 10-20 (don't know the exact number) and as always the east coast teams will be given the majority of those bids. I liken it to LMU and UC Irvine's cases last year (and even UW), where they had double digit wins, but were not invited to the dance. WE MUST WIN TONIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!
