Coaching Philosophy Empty Coaching Philosophy

Post by purple haze Sun Dec 05, 2010 9:10 pm

Borrowing from the "other" football, this quote about the role of a coach from U of O's Chip Kelly after an undefeated regular season rang true to me (slightly paraphrased while transcribing from TV): "Create an environment where they can be successful, then get out of their way and let them play."
This view seems far more applicable to free-flowing soccer than to the micromanaged play-calling of big-time college football, but I love the sentiment behind it.

I'm starting to like the guy. (see the signature below)

your job as a coach is learning as much as you can about them; how you can put them in a place where they can be the best they can be and in a position that is most useful to the team. That is about collaboration, working together and that of course takes trust. Trust is something given and you are honoured when it is given. But to get trust you have to give it. ~ Clive Charles

There is a good article in the NYT magazine today, largely about Chip

Two things I heard in an interview from one of Kelly's players:

He tells them that the things they are learning playing football for the Ducks are more than just for football. They are lessons that will help them throughout their lives. Sound like Clive?

And, he tells them he wants them to make their beds every morning. Sound like "Keep your shoes polished?"

Purplegeezer: Thanks for the link to the NYT story -- just fascinating! Anyone want to speculate about what the next innovation in college soccer will be?

Doesn't exist in US soccer. You thought college was rough, watch a USL game. And MLS is not much better.

Yeah, that's a tough one since refs are pretty much limited to only seeing regional games and/or specific conferences due to economics... (I mean if the NCAA hesitates at sending teams too far away for tourney games, somehow I think officials rate even lower on the totem pole.)

All good stuff... except Chip Kelley also oversaw the 2010 offseason, which featured several arrests for drunk driving and assault, player dismissals, and a star running back (and Heisman finalist) arrested for stangling his girlfriend.

Don't think we can quite equate him with Clive.

Be fair. I think all those incidents were with Mike's kids. This group seems pretty focussed on playing the game right. After a bout of not dealing well with behavior, he did get rid of Jeremiah and made it clear that stuff won't fly at OU, even if it risks success. He's a young guy.
There haven't Yet been issues with the team that is trying for the big prize.

UP had a little behavioral issue with a bunch that were Clive's recruits which resulted in two game suspensions for most of the team, so nobody is perfect.

I agree. I don't think it's anything negative against Chip so much as to say that Clive was unique and special. I can't picture any other coach in the state drawing the same kind of attention at his or her wake...

Another difference: Most likely Chip Kelly is just passing through on his way somewhere else; it's hard to see why he would settle in Oregon for the long term. The general lack of criminal records or bad behavior among for women soccer players is more reason to love the sport and those who play it.

Hahaha... I agree...and there won't be any stories of boosters offering $ to women soccer players (AKA USC) any time soon...or having their individual locker rooms at Clive soccer complex adorned with their own personal X-Box (U of O).
