When I run into folks, they keep asking me where I get Pliny the Elder. As a public service, I went to the Russian river website and found a list of the places it's sold in Oregon. It the stores, it's usually in bottles, and in the Pubs it's almost always on tap.

That's quite the list, PurpleG. Do you plan your vacations around that list? LOL.

It sounds like a great brew from the reviews; I need to try it for the first time. Are you also a fan of Bridgeport's IPA? That one is award-winning and has a great reputation as well...

Bridgeport is good... But comparing it to Pliny would be like comparing Adam Quick to Patty Mills, same general variety, but on a completely different level of quality...

How about a Dogfish Head 90 minute (or even better the 120) IPA? I can't wait to take my trip down to Delaware...

OK, I went by the nearest New Seasons from your list, to look for this nectar of which you speak so highly. They had all kinds of beers I have never seen before, but no Pliny. The 1000 posters clubhouse stock boy must be hoarding all the local supply. Evil or Very Mad

How come WINCO wasn't on the list; that's where the wife always tells me to shop.

I think it's fair to say your chances of finding it at Winco are nil.

Even at the places listed, its pretty scarce, the stores especially. The three best chances I've found are County Cork, The Moon and Sixpence, and the Horsebrass. My local watering hole (County Cork) runs out every weekend, and doesn't seem to restock until Tuesdays. I see reports on Russian River's website that they even run out at their own pub quite often.

DTR -
the bridgeport is OK, but if I'm drinking in their place, I prefer their ESB for some reason. I just ate their tonight, as a matter of fact, and they had it on Nitro. pretty good.

Mmmmmmm nitroooooo..... I don't mind BP IPA either, it's the best I can get at costco, but I really liked the Hop Czar, same recipe but 3x the hops.... And yeah, that ESB is a pretty mean brew.

You looking for bottles or draft? Belmont Station and John's Marketplace are likely the best locations to find the bottle.

90 is a damn near perfect beer, great balance. But if you lust for hops, Pliny is probably a better choice. As for 120, I drank a 750 of that once......it didn't end well.

OK, I am now on a search for Pliny in the Greater Hartford area. It might take some time, good thing I am only semi-employed. If this beer is as good as it now sounds, you might see some real fluff posts from me (about 750 of them), followed by a flight to PDX, then a MAX ride to the transfer station where I will hop on the 1 or the 40 bus line then sprint to the bottom of the hill and take my rightful place next to Geezer and his Pliny...no, our Pliny.

It might be an extinct line soon. The 33-Fremont is one of 12 lines slated to be eliminated entirely to fill TriMet's budget shortfall:

Yeah, I love Nitro beers too...especially the McMenamin's Nitro. Well, I'll give the Pliny a try. It sounds like it's much scarcer than Bridgeport. Bridgeport's IPA did win an award in a beer tasting contest in Germany not too many years ago, but, from the description of Pliny it sounds like comparing apples and oranges...

Do you have any Agentinian beer recommendations, Geezer?

Jerome, from Mendoza, Argentina. It's from a small brewpub in Mendoza that is a lot like one of the Portland brewpubs. They had a front door made out of an old British phone booth you had to walk through to get in. The Brits built the phone system in Argentina, (the railroads, too. so although cars drive on the right, trains drive on the Left) so there are probably more old red cast iron phone booths in Argentina than there ever were in England.
Pliny Zbooth

Jerome is available here. I've had the IPA at Pambiche, a great Cuban restaurant at 28th and Glisan, NE. New Seasons has a dark Jerome, but I've never had it, so I can't comment on it.

Speaking of Pliny-- OK, we weren't speaking of Pliny, but here goes-- County Cork has Pliny the Younger on tap right now. Two cautions. It is 10.61%. and it's $7.75 for a 12 0z glass, and that's the only way they will sell it. Another example of society trying to protect you from yourself.

thanks for the softball....

The Elder isn't exactly cheap either... it was $20 a pitcher off tap at a bar in Tacoma a few weeks back, but I think there is something to that expensive tag protecting ourselves from... ourselves...

And what is the story with the usage of the Roman statesman for beer titles?? I read that the Younger is a triple hopped version of their IPA (Elder is only double hopped)...

If they ever make a Vesuvius ale, I'm sure it will be the death of me... I mean we know what the mountain did to Pliny the Elder...
